Mercedes Bauzá es la nueva integrante de la Selección Nacional de Fútbol Femenino de Puerto Rico...

Mercedes, estudiante de 2do año universitario en Greensboro College, en North Carolina, era una de las 30 candidatas de la Pre Selección del coach del TeamPUR, Shek Borkowski. Ante la baja de Cristina Torres por fractura en la clavícula, lesión sufrida en los entrenamientos, y de la BoricUSA Lilli Andino por razones personales, Shek contactó de inmediato a Mercedes, quien con emoción aceptó el reto de formar parte de NuestraSelePR que estará compitiendo a partir de este sábado 5 de mayo en la 1ra fase clasificatoria CONCACAF para la Copa Mundial FIFA Femenina Francia 2019

A fin de cuentas, Shek llevará a República Dominicana una plantilla de 19 jugadoras, en lugar del máximo de 20 permitido. El onceno boricua se medirá al país anfitrión, a Cuba, Aruba y Anguila. Sólo el ganador entre los cinco equipos nacionales participantes adelanta a la 2da etapa pre mundialista de la CONCACAF.

La joven Bauzá tuvo un año 'Sophomore' impresionante con su equipo de soccer colegial de Greensboro College, donde juega de delantera.

"If you like speed, you got it! She's a forward with amazing speed, very aggressive, and physical", fue la reacción, a preguntas de QuePalo.com, de parte del head coach de soccer femenino de Greensboro College, GUS MOTA.

"When you first look at her she doesn't look like much, because of her size, but she plays like she's 6 foot tall. She's someone that if you can isolate in a 1v1 situations she's going to blow right pass the defense. She's predominately a winger but can play at the point position as well. Very athletic", abundó coach Mota.

Otra importante opinión sobre Mercedes nos la compartió el coordinador de reclutamiento de dicho programa deportivo colegial, y mano derecha del director técnico.

"Mercedes is a phenomenal player with tremendous speed. She can play attacking midfielder also. She utilizes her speed In the attack and is a very, very athletic player, and makes the most acrobatic goals seem easy", describió LORENZO RODRÍGUEZ, Assistant Coach & Recruiting Coordinator del programa de soccer femenino de Greensboro College.

Mercedes nació y se crió en Carolina del Norte. Su herencia puertorriqueña viene de su abuelo paterno, don Edwin Bauzá. Su papá sufrió un cambio de apellido cuando infante, por razones familiares, de Bauzá a Fisher. Sin embargo, Mercedes está decidida a regresar a sus raíces, de manera que ya está gestionando el proceso legal para cambiarse el apellido, formalmente, de Fisher a Bauzá. De hecho, ella fue enfática en que quería que en todo momento me refiriera a ella en este reportaje como Bauzá.

"My father is Puerto Rican by his father, Edwin Bauza. As of now my name has being Mercedes Fisher. However, I've always wanted my grandfathers last name. Recently, the Puerto Rican side of my family has given me their blessing to be able to represent the last name of Bauza in honor of this incredible adventure I'm about to embark on. So that change will be coming soon", aseguró categóricamente la Srta. Bauzá.





Su relato de cómo llega hasta oídos de Shek Borkowski como futbolista elegible para representar a Puerto Rico a nivel FIFA es de los más interesante.

"This is actually a funny story. Ever since I started playing soccer, I've always wanted to play for Puerto Rico. This dream to be able to play for Puerto Rico developed in the back of my mind. Ever since then it's been something that "would be nice" but more realistically my hopes were never too high. It wasn't until coming into Greensboro College that the opportunity presented itself", nos cuenta Mercedes.

"Thank God for connections! My assistant coach, Lorenzo Rodriguez, happened to know someone associated to the Puerto Rican Women's Soccer Team. After the incredible Sophomore year I had, he offered to attempt to get in contact with the team. After a while we received a response and from there my head coach, Gus Mota, took charge and put in many hours getting in contact with Shek Borkowski. Coach Borkowski then got in contact with me and I was very quick to show my enthusiasm for this opportunity", concluyó Bauzá
